AEO Meaning: What Answer Engine Optimization Is
In search marketing, AEO means answer engine optimization: improving how content can be found and used in answers from search and AI systems. Google’s generative AI search guide identifies AEO and GEO as terms for work on visibility in AI search experiences.

AEO, SEO, and GEO: what is the difference?
The terms overlap, but emphasize different aspects of search publishing:
| Term | Full name | Main emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Helping search engines discover and understand content. |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Visibility in answer-based search experiences. |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | Visibility in generative AI search experiences. |
Google’s AI search guide treats optimization for its generative features as SEO. The labels therefore describe overlapping priorities rather than three independent publishing strategies.
How answer engines use web content
An answer can be presented in different ways. Google’s featured-snippet documentation describes results that display a page’s descriptive text before the link. Putting a direct answer on a page does not give the publisher control over that placement: Google states that its systems choose when a page should become a featured snippet.
For generative results, Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode provide responses with links to supporting websites. Both may search related subtopics through a technique called query fan-out. In other words, one question can lead to several searches for supporting information. This documented behavior helps explain why an AEO page needs enough substance to support an answer, as well as a clear statement of the answer itself.
What AEO work involves
Use the following as a publishing checklist, with access rules checked separately for each platform.
Answer the actual question
Choose a question the page can answer accurately. Use a title and headings that make its scope clear, then state the answer before expanding on the reasoning. Keep necessary dates, definitions, prerequisites, and exceptions beside the claims they qualify. Use a table for a comparison and numbered steps for a procedure when those formats fit the content.
Review the opening answer together with the rest of the page. Check that its wording remains accurate when read on its own, including any condition that changes the conclusion. Remove passages that neither answer the main question nor explain a necessary part of it.
Make the evidence checkable
Google’s people-first content guidance asks whether a page offers original information or analysis, adds value when using other sources, and makes its sourcing and authorship clear. Apply those checks by linking factual claims to their sources, identifying who wrote or reviewed the material, and explaining how any original research was conducted.
Use publication or review dates when they help establish which version of the information applies. Update the answer when its underlying facts change, including any summary, table, or FAQ that repeats them.
Make the answer accessible
Google’s AI feature documentation recommends allowing crawler access, using internal links, and making important information available as text. Its eligibility guidance says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; meeting the requirements does not guarantee selection.
Check the page’s indexing status and crawl restrictions before treating missing citations as a writing problem. Read the current eligibility guidance for the service being targeted alongside those checks.
Platforms also have their own controls. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked for page content to appear in ChatGPT summaries and snippets. The FAQ identifies GPTBot separately for training controls. Review the relevant settings according to the access and reuse the publisher intends to permit.
Does AEO require special schema or a fixed format?
For Google’s generative search features, Google’s optimization guide says no special structured data, AI text file, or Markdown version is required. It also rejects a requirement to split content into tiny chunks. These statements concern Google Search; check other services’ documentation before assuming they share the same rules.
Google’s people-first guidance also says it has no preferred article word count. Give the question enough space to be answered completely. A definition, a detailed explanation, and a procedure need different amounts of context.
Use an FAQ section when several related questions need distinct answers. Where an FAQ would repeat the same material, keep the answer in its main section. Decide the structure from the information the page needs to explain.
How to measure AEO
Bing’s AI Performance announcement documents citation counts, cited URLs, trends, and grounding queries across supported AI experiences, including Microsoft Copilot and AI-generated summaries in Bing. Grounding queries are phrases used to retrieve content, and the report describes those data as a sample of citation activity.
The same announcement explains that citation metrics do not show ranking, authority, or a page’s role within an individual answer. A citation count therefore measures a particular kind of visibility; it does not by itself establish that someone visited the site or completed an action.
Track two kinds of outcomes separately:
- Answer visibility: which pages are cited, the reporting period, the platform, and the topics associated with those citations.
- Site outcomes: referral visits and the actions visitors complete, as recorded by site analytics.
OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify visits in analytics. Such visits are a separate observation from whether a page is cited.
Record the page version, observation dates, and platform when comparing results. When checking answers manually, also record the exact query and retain the result as an observation for that check. Keep the dates of content edits alongside those observations so later reviews can compare the same page and reporting period.
