Email Marketing News, October 2026: Campaign Agents, Click Data, and API Deadlines
An October nurture campaign may look ready in the editor while its audience, approval path, or success metric is still unsettled. In September 2026, HubSpot put campaign planning and automation on a shared beta canvas; Klaviyo gave operators finer control over recorded email clicks; and Adobe added audience and data checks. Meanwhile, Marketo repeated a September 30 API failure condition. This issue covers primary announcements and documentation published September 1 through September 29, 2026. The useful decision is where to add a human check or integration test before the next send.

Keep agent-built campaigns in draft until owners approve the path
A B2B SaaS team launching a trial-conversion sequence now has a more connected production surface in HubSpot. Marketing Studio’s September 16 instructions describe campaign planning, asset creation, and execution in one workspace for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. AI can propose a goal, audience, budget, assets, and automations; the proposed assets and automations are not created in a published state. This is a public beta with campaign permissions and account AI settings to configure, not a general-availability promise for every portal.
The draft state gives a growth team a practical checkpoint. Freeze the actual offer and target account criteria before an agent makes a nurture sequence, then have the lifecycle owner inspect exclusions, CRM fields, links, and follow-up branches in the generated assets. HubSpot’s September 16 approval documentation says Marketing Studio can track tasks and approvals, but setting up and using its approval feature requires Marketing Hub Enterprise. A Professional team should define its own sign-off outside that feature instead of assuming the shared canvas supplies a formal approval gate.
HubSpot’s vendor examples of faster production do not answer whether the campaign creates qualified pipeline. Start with one low-risk segment, hold the brief and offer constant, and judge the finished program on qualified response and downstream account progression as well as send volume. More generated assets only help if the CRM state and follow-up rules are fit for the buyer journey.
Decide what an unrecorded click means before reading the dashboard
Klaviyo dated its new email click-tracking controls to September 8. Operators can stop recording clicks across an account, for recipients according to click-tracking consent, or on individual links. Its September 24 implementation guide is unusually explicit about the consequence: an untracked link still takes the reader to its destination, but Klaviyo does not record a new click event. Tracking is on by default, and click-tracking consent is separate from permission to receive marketing email.
That distinction can change an October report without changing reader behavior. Klaviyo says unrecorded clicks fall out of click-rate reporting, click-based attribution, click-based segments, and flow triggers. If an onboarding branch waits for a clicked-email event, switching off tracking for a recipient can prevent the branch from firing even when the person visits the page. The team should map each click-based trigger to a first-party product event or another permitted signal before changing the setting, then compare reporting periods only after documenting which recipients and links were observable. This is a measurement and workflow decision; the product guide does not determine which consent rule applies in a given jurisdiction.
The same lesson applies when deciding whether a campaign improved. A lower click count after a tracking-policy change is not, by itself, evidence of lower interest. Preserve the policy change date and use a stable business event—such as a qualified demo request or activated trial—as the primary comparison where that event is measured consistently.
Separate agent access, beta APIs, and released integration versions
The previous issue put K:BOS on a watch list. At the September 9 event, Klaviyo announced a headless platform with more than 260 MCP tools and capabilities and more than 490 APIs accessible from external AI environments. The announcement says an agent can read, write, and go live without opening Klaviyo’s interface. It also describes SQL in Composer and MCP as a preview for profiles, events, segments, lists, and catalogs; forms, flows, and custom objects were still future scope. Klaviyo calls itself a B2C CRM, so a B2B SaaS operator should treat this as a concrete agent-access design to assess where Klaviyo is actually in the stack, not as evidence that the release improves SaaS pipeline.
Before granting an external agent access, list the exact object types it can read, draft, change, and send. The distinction matters more than the tool count: a read-only performance query, a segment edit, and a live send create different blast radii. Keep the first pilot to a named account and a reversible action, capture its change log, and require a separate send approval. The announcement does not specify one shared approval model for all of its tools.
HubSpot’s September release answers one forecast from the last issue at a different boundary. Its September 15 developer rollup lists Projects 2026.09 as generally available and says most of 44 updated APIs carry version parity, while the Automation Workflows and Marketing Forms APIs are public beta. This confirms the platform release state; the rollup alone does not verify that every account has exercised the CRM write-validation behavior announced earlier. For a sync that creates contacts or deals, record the API version and test representative required-property and association cases in the target portal before upgrading.
The same September 15 support notice starts a longer migration clock: HubSpot says numbered v1–v3 APIs and legacy apps will become unsupported with September 2027 enforcement, and it recommends moving directly to date-based API versions. This is a planning deadline, not a September 2026 service shutdown. Inventory calls now, then budget migration by endpoint and app architecture; some replacement paths were still being finalized when the notice appeared.
Check the audience state at the source and at activation
An email platform cannot correct a wrong account tier or lifecycle status that arrived from another system. In its September 22 Experience Platform release, Adobe lists a HubSpot V2 source connector, conversational statistical and semantic dataset-validation skills, and Audience Builder warnings for fields incompatible with the chosen evaluation method. The release also adds an edge monitor for requests skipped by Spike Protection. These are different checks: a field may be syntactically usable for an audience while its value is stale, or a valid event may fail to arrive because a traffic spike exceeded capacity.
For a SaaS expansion campaign fed by CRM data, test one known account from the HubSpot record through the Adobe dataset, audience rule, and final email segment. Compare the value and timestamp at each step; inspect skipped requests during the same window. An AI validation result should direct an investigation, not authorize a send on its own. Adobe’s notes establish the available controls, not connector completeness or data accuracy in a particular implementation.
Resolve the Marketo list dependency before September 30
The previous issue flagged an impending Marketo limit; Adobe’s September 18 release notes still say that, starting September 30, Get Lead Activities and Get Lead Changes calls using listId will fail with error 1003 when the target static list has at least 10,000 leads. The same notes say access_token query-parameter authentication was deprecated on August 31 and direct integrations to the Authorization header. At this issue’s September 29 cutoff, the list-size rule was scheduled. The source is not proof that any individual instance had enforced it.
An operations team should search its own scheduled jobs for those two endpoint names and the listId parameter, then record list size, job owner, and the downstream report or automation that depends on each call. Test the replacement query or extraction path with an account-sized sample and compare record counts before the cutoff. A weekly lead-activity dashboard that silently stops updating can make a nurture program appear quiet for the wrong reason. Treat a 1003 response as a failed data feed to repair, not a reason to resend the same request unchanged.
Put the October send on a five-part release check
For the next campaign, the meaningful gate is a short set of evidence that joins these releases to the team’s own system. Each check has a distinct owner and failure mode:
- Campaign: save the audience and offer brief, generated asset review, and named publication approval; confirm whether HubSpot’s Enterprise approval feature is available.
- Measurement: record Klaviyo click-tracking settings and policy-change date, then use a stable qualified-action metric for comparisons.
- Agent authority: list every enabled read, write, and send path; keep preview SQL and beta APIs out of any assumed general-availability baseline.
- Data path: trace one known CRM record into the CDP audience and final segment, including timestamp and skipped-event checks.
- API continuity: test the HubSpot version used by each write integration and clear any Marketo job exposed to the September 30 static-list rule.
If any check has no owner or repeatable test, limit the October launch to the path the team can verify. The product releases make more work possible; the decision to widen a send or an agent’s write authority still belongs to the operator.
Frequently asked questions
What should replace clicks as the primary metric when some clicks are not recorded?
Choose a business event that the team can measure consistently across both periods, such as a qualified demo request, activated trial, or sales-accepted account, and keep the audience and time window fixed. Klaviyo’s click-tracking guide says the change removes some click events from reporting, attribution, segments, and triggers; it does not say that visits or buyer intent vanished. Keep click rate as a diagnostic only for the population whose clicks were recorded under the same policy.
How can a team test a campaign agent without granting launch authority?
Use a bounded brief and let the agent draft a single campaign in a test segment. HubSpot says its generated assets and automations start unpublished. Have the campaign owner compare the generated audience, offer, exclusions, and workflow against the brief, then have a separate person approve publication. Record the review outside Marketing Studio if the account lacks the Enterprise approval feature.
Which Marketo integrations face the September 30 list-size rule?
The September release note names calls to Get Lead Activities or Get Lead Changes that pass listId for a static list with 10,000 or more leads. Search API logs and scheduled jobs for that combination, then test the affected feed’s replacement and downstream counts. A large list used elsewhere is not, by itself, evidence that this particular API rule applies.
