Not all changes are intentional. A design release can remove explanatory text from rendered HTML. A content system can alter canonical URLs. A cleanup can orphan a valuable page. A merge can replace a focused answer with a broader page that no longer satisfies the same query.
Compare the affected period with:
- version-control and deployment records;
- content revision history;
- redirect and canonical maps;
- internal-link and navigation changes;
- rendered HTML and resource availability; and
- the actual page indexed or selected by Google.
Site-wide signals can contribute even when a specific page did not change. Google’s ranking-systems guide says systems and signals can operate at page and site levels.
Cause 4: competitors, intent, demand, or the result page changed
Rank is relative. A page can remain unchanged while other pages become more useful, more specific, fresher where freshness matters, or better aligned with the current interpretation of a query.
The query itself may also represent different needs over time. A term can acquire a news meaning, a product meaning, or a stronger local or transactional interpretation. New result features may take attention even if the listed position appears stable.
Inspect the current and historical result set where reliable records exist:
- Which page types appear now?
- Which audience task do the leading results resolve?
- Did named entities, product categories, or current events alter the likely interpretation?
- Did new search features change the path to a click?
- Are new competitors genuinely stronger for the task, or simply different?
Do not imitate every visible heading. Compare reader task, evidence, scope, and format. A page that deserves to stay narrow should not become a generic compilation merely because a broader result briefly appears.
Seasonality belongs here when it changes demand and result composition. Google includes seasonality among possible traffic-drop causes, but no universal seasonal adjustment can identify it for a specific query.
Cause 5: Google’s systems or policies changed
Google changes ranking systems, launches broad core updates, applies spam systems and policies, and experiences service incidents. Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for documented timing.
Google’s core-update guidance states that core updates are broad and not targeted at individual pages or sites.
Separate four events:
- Core or other ranking update: a broad system change.
- Manual action: a documented action visible in the relevant Search Console report.
