Social Media Platform Updates, September 2026: API and Ad Changes
LinkedIn ended Legacy Geo support on August 31, 2026, so campaign-creation requests using the old values began failing. Earlier in the month, TikTok expanded Symphony on August 3, 2026; then YouTube changed its public-view definition on August 24, 2026. Together, these updates changed how teams make creative, submit campaigns, and read results inside the tools they already use.
Creation: TikTok put longer AI video inside Symphony
TikTok’s August 3 Symphony update integrated Dreamina Seedance 2.5 into Symphony Creative Studio, Symphony Automations in Ads Manager, and the Symphony API. It also expanded generated-video length and reference capacity, with timestamp-specific direction.
Creative generation can now sit inside the same workflow used to build and automate a campaign. The useful question is no longer only “Can the model make an asset?” but “Can the team invoke it, review it, and measure the resulting work?” TikTok says Symphony applies AI labels, invisible watermarking, and C2PA Content Credentials before the asset leaves that production path.
Judge the added capacity against the existing process, not by the number of assets it produces.
Activation: LinkedIn and Reddit changed what campaign requests accept
LinkedIn’s August Marketing API version 202608 added Matched Audiences access, account-level dynamic UTM parameters, and MQL and SQL conversion events for the qualified-leads optimization goal. It paired those additions with a DMP-segment cap, making audience capacity part of whether a campaign request succeeds.
Reddit’s August 3 and August 10 Ads API notes did the same for targeting values and destination URLs. The practical step is one preflight test for LinkedIn’s version header and audience limit, then Reddit’s accepted values and URL rule.
The next dates are LinkedIn’s Marketing API version 202509 sunset on September 15 and Reddit’s new campaign-objective enums, use_catalog field, and onsite Lead Generation Forms API sunset on September 21, followed by a September 30 pause for existing ads using onsite forms.
Measurement: LinkedIn and YouTube changed what counts
LinkedIn changed its mobile Sponsored Content impression rule in August, while leaving the desktop rule in place. The mobile time threshold is now shorter, so the impression baseline no longer has the same definition on the two device groups.
YouTube’s August 24 public-view change widened the public counter and renamed the prior definition engaged view. Click-through rate, average view duration, and retention remain anchored on engaged views, so those measures still describe people who continued beyond the initial frame or clicked to watch.
A public-view increase after August 24 can therefore coexist with unchanged continued viewing. The public counter describes the broadened total; engaged views provide the more continuous before-and-after series for viewing behavior.
Six August changes: dates, fields, and thresholds
The exact values are easier to scan together:
| Date | Platform change | Value to carry forward |
|---|---|---|
| August 3, 2026 | TikTok integrated Dreamina Seedance 2.5 into Symphony. | Generated-video maximum: 15 → 30 seconds; image, video, and audio references: 9 → 50; timestamp-specific direction. |
| August 2026 | LinkedIn Marketing API version 202608 | Dynamic UTMs: /adTrackingParameters; conversion types: MARKETING_QUALIFIED_LEAD, SALES_QUALIFIED_LEAD; sponsored-account DMP-segment cap across the listed Matched Audience and Predictive Audience types: 1,000, with 429 / SEGMENT_LIMIT_EXCEEDED above the cap. |
| August 3 and 10, 2026 | Reddit clarified its Ads API requirements. | Targeting values: non-null objects or arrays; image, carousel, and video formats: click_url must equal destination_url. |
| August 31, 2026 | LinkedIn ended Legacy Geo support for Ads Targeting. | Replacement: Bing-geo; old values: 400 / INVALID_VALUE_FOR_FIELD. |
| August 2026 | LinkedIn changed mobile Sponsored Content impression counting. | Mobile: at least 50% of the ad or at least 300dp visible for 300 milliseconds; desktop: at least 50% visible for one second. |
| August 24, 2026 | YouTube changed its public-view definition. | Public view: first frame across Shorts, long-form video, podcasts, and live streams; prior definition: engaged view. |
Operating contract: record the platform change beside the result
For the next reporting window, keep the answer to three checks beside each result.
| If this moves | Keep this record beside the result |
|---|---|
| Production time, review effort, brand corrections, or campaign results | Account eligibility, enabled Symphony tool, generation limits, and review owner |
| Campaign acceptance, pause status, or behavior after an API release | API version, migration date, accepted fields, and returned error |
| A visible count without the same movement in engagement, qualified, or billable outcomes | Metric name, effective date, and comparable series |
