GEO SEO News, October 2026: Search Access, AI Discovery, and Measurement

A growth dashboard can show falling search clicks, rising bot requests, and more AI mentions in the same month. September made each of those numbers harder to interpret on its own. This issue covers September 1 through September 30, 2026, with rollout and consultation status checked again on October 1. Google’s ranking update remains open, Cloudflare changed crawler controls, and ChatGPT expanded plugin discovery. The useful October response is to protect search access first, repair measurement second, and test a new distribution surface only where it can bring the right buyer to a useful product experience.

A search analyst's desk separates ranking movement from image-led query data.

Keep the September spam rollout open in traffic diagnosis

Google began its September spam update on September 24 at 09:15 Pacific time. The notice says the rollout applies globally, covers all languages, and may take up to two weeks. When checked again on October 1, the incident record still contained no completion entry. The previous monthly issue discussed the completed August rollout; September therefore creates a fresh window to annotate, rather than an extension of an old diagnosis.

The record names no affected site, tactic, or SaaS category. A fall in clicks during this window cannot establish that Google penalized AI-written content or comparison pages. I would compare the same product, integration, comparison, and educational page groups before and during the rollout, then split their results by query, country, and device. If positions stay steady while clicks fall, demand and result presentation deserve inspection. If impressions vanish from a small set of URLs, indexing and access deserve inspection. The update annotation helps locate the problem; it cannot replace those checks.

Check the collector before trusting a quiet ranking chart. SISTRIX reported reduced data collection on September 16; its September 26 follow-up says extra quality checks leave fewer keywords updated daily and can leave older ranking dates in projects. That describes the vendor’s measurement process, with no basis for applying the same effect to every tracker. For a team using those exports, compare their update timestamps with fresh Search Console observations before reporting stability or recovery. Otherwise, an unchanged row may reflect an old observation while an editor waits for a ranking signal that has not been collected.

Keep major rewrites out of the recovery plan until the affected cohort and the rollout status are understood. Fix a broken canonical, blocked page, or obsolete integration claim as soon as the evidence identifies it. The cost of waiting on a broader rewrite is a slower response to a possible ranking change. The benefit is preserving the comparison period instead of changing content, tracking, and crawler access together and losing the ability to tell which intervention helped.

Audit crawler controls before spending on more content

Apple’s September-dated Applebot documentation makes a useful distinction explicit: Applebot-Extended governs model-training permission and is not considered in Search ranking. It does not fetch pages itself. A company can disallow that use while allowing Applebot to crawl for discovery in Apple products. Apple’s separate nosnippet control affects use as context in generated output. Decide whether the business wants search discovery, model training, and answer inclusion separately; a single company-wide “block AI” instruction is too imprecise to implement safely.

Cloudflare’s September 15 change makes that distinction operational. Its Disallow AI Training setting keeps participating mixed-use crawlers available for search while expressing a training preference. The stronger Block and Block on pages with ads settings now include Googlebot, Bingbot, and Applebot, so selecting them can also restrict search access. Cloudflare says existing preferences are migrated to preserve their practical effect. That reduces migration risk, but it leaves a reason to audit a new selection before applying it to a product or documentation domain.

There is an implementation gap to record: Cloudflare says Bing’s robots.txt training preference support is targeted for early 2027, and its setting does not yet convey that preference to Bing automatically. Do not tell a legal or content owner that one switch already covers every operator. Have engineering record the actual Search, Training, and Agent settings and check access to important URLs after any change. For a SaaS firm whose docs drive evaluation, an accidental crawl restriction can undermine the next content sprint before a writer publishes anything.

Use multimodal data to choose pages, then test buyer value

September extends the earlier AI measurement story. On September 24, Google introduced web multimodal reporting in both Search results and Generative AI performance reports. The filter covers Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads, and Chrome’s Search this image action, and supports export. Global integration began that day, with metrics appearing for properties receiving traffic from those queries. The announcement still describes a rollout when checked October 1; it does not promise that every property has populated data.

The new dimension describes how a search began. It does not identify the screenshot or diagram on your site that caused an appearance. For a field-service platform, a prospect may start with a photograph of equipment. For a developer tool, the starting object may be an error screenshot. Inspect landing pages for those tasks when the data supports doing so, but do not treat the filter as proof that commissioning more graphics will increase citations. The design decision still needs a named buyer problem and evidence that the page helps solve it.

Keep the ordinary Search and generative AI views in their own units. An AI exposure observation does not establish a click, recommendation, or qualified lead. Compare the landing pages with downstream visits and buyer actions under the company’s existing attribution rules, and retain the report, market, period, and filter beside each result. If the sample is thin, keep visual-search questions in research and routine page maintenance instead of creating a large visual-content program from a product announcement.

Voice and camera interactions are moving too. Google’s September 15 Gemini 3.8 Live announcement, updated September 17, describes the model rolling out in Search Live with real-time visual context and spoken troubleshooting. This gives teams selling software for physical work a reason to inspect whether setup and troubleshooting pages explain observable states clearly. It supplies no SaaS traffic uplift or citation rule. The multimodal reporting announcement also does not establish that every Search Live voice interaction is covered, so keep any Search Live testing labeled separately.

AI Mode monitoring rewards a test of timely information

In a September 28 announcement, Google Search product VP Robby Stein said AI Mode information monitoring was rolling out globally beyond Pro and Ultra subscribers to all users. He described ongoing checks across changing information on websites, forums, and social posts. The announcement gives a broader audience access to standing information requests; it does not establish a new ranking factor or a SaaS referral result.

For a B2B SaaS team, the practical experiment is modest. Check whether public pricing, release, compatibility, and integration pages clearly state what changed and when. Test a recurring buyer question in the available experience and record which sources it returns, with the account, market, and date. Expand the work only if relevant questions and useful referrals appear. A content calendar built around hypothetical monitoring traffic would commit budget before establishing that buyers use the feature for this category.

Recheck Perplexity answers after its retrieval rebuild

Perplexity’s September 24 Photon announcement says its new internal engine now powers retrieval and ranking in the production search stack, and supports a new fast Search API preset. The company reports that p99 retrieval-and-ranking latency fell from about 800 milliseconds to 65 milliseconds after migration. That figure concerns a stage that selects candidate pages for an answer. It cannot be read as whole-answer speed or a gain in citations for a SaaS website.

If Perplexity is already important to your buyers, rerun a fixed set of evaluation questions and preserve the market, language, and product surface. Record the returned sources and the eventual recommendation separately. Teams using the Search API for research should compare the fast and default presets on the completeness of their own SaaS questions before trading depth for latency. The October decision is whether a changed retrieval system alters a useful source or research result; the announcement supplies no reason to rewrite a page around a supposed new ranking rule.

ChatGPT plugin discovery creates a product distribution decision

OpenAI’s September 29 DevDay recap announced improved plugin ranking and recommendations in the ChatGPT directory and conversations, available to all plans. It also described extensions with sidebar homes, interactive panels, and file viewers. Users choose the plugins they use and approve their access. For a SaaS vendor, this is a concrete distribution opportunity when the product can perform a useful task inside the conversation, rather than merely provide information about itself.

Teams that already distribute a custom GPT have a maintenance decision first. OpenAI’s September 11 release note announced planned retirement and migration to plugins. Existing GPTs remain usable until the applicable retirement date, with timing and availability varying by plan and workspace. If a campaign, customer guide, or onboarding email points to a GPT, identify its creator and intended users, then test the replacement and access before changing that link. Budget for preserving a working acquisition asset before commissioning another one.

I would give a plugin experiment to a product and growth pair with one buyer task: inspect a workflow, summarize an account’s data, or turn a document into an actionable result. Judge the experiment by successful authorized use, activation, and qualified accounts, alongside the support and maintenance burden. OpenAI disclosed neither the recommendation formula nor guaranteed placement. Existing organic web citations therefore provide no basis for forecasting plugin discovery. A team with no useful conversational task should first improve its public product evidence; a directory listing alone does not create a reason to connect a business account.

Update classification and model settings before comparing AI visibility

Microsoft Clarity added Page Classification to Bot Activity on September 22. It groups requests by page type using content and URL rules, and lets custom classifications override automatic ones. The feature was available at announcement. A SaaS team can now inspect whether bots concentrate on its blog while missing product, integration, or documentation areas, without reading hundreds of URL rows. Check the categories against the actual site structure before drawing that conclusion; a custom docs category is useful only if it includes the right paths.

On September 29, Clarity added editable Brand Terms in AI Visibility, following August’s branded and nonbranded query segmentation. Teams can refine aliases, product names, translations, and common misspellings, then group or filter them under a brand. This is a meaningful follow-up for companies with several product names or localized brands: a query misclassified as nonbrand can distort the apparent balance between existing awareness and category discovery.

Do the classification cleanup before presenting a trend to the growth lead, and annotate the date of the edit. A higher branded share after adding aliases may be a measurement change rather than new awareness. Likewise, more bot requests to integration pages show crawler attention, not that a model recommended the product. Use these observations to select pages and queries for investigation, then compare actual answer samples and qualified visits. Combining requests, branded queries, citations, and leads into one AI visibility score would hide the stage at which the business needs to improve.

A prompt panel also needs its model settings preserved. OpenAI’s September 14 release note retired automatic switching from Instant to Thinking for Plus and Pro globally, while retaining manual selection and automatic switching for safety. Record the visible model choice and account plan beside each answer sample. If the earlier selection is unknown, begin a new comparison period instead of assigning a change in recommendations to the website. A measurement process that changes its answering model can produce a trend the content team did not cause.

Report procurement deserves the same care. On September 28, PR Newswire introduced a Trajaan-powered AEO and GEO Brand Report in Amplify for APAC, covering mentions, source domains and URLs, and example answers. If the October PR budget includes distribution in that region, request a sample report with its prompt panel, engines, markets, and repeat schedule before buying on the promise of AI visibility. The seller’s announcement establishes a new reporting product; it supplies no independent evidence that distributing a release increases a SaaS firm’s citations or revenue. Buy it when the observations can change a communication decision and can be inspected outside the sales presentation.

Replace dependent Reddit research feeds before November

Reddit’s September 30 infrastructure announcement says RSS support will end on November 13. It points moderators toward supported alternatives, but says feeds outside a community the user moderates have no replacement. For a GEO team using subreddit RSS to collect buyer questions, objection language, or brand mentions, this creates an October dependency check. Identify which research feeds would stop, and ask the tool owner for a supported access plan before building more automation around them.

The announcement concerns feed access. It does not say Reddit pages will disappear from search results or AI citations, and it cannot support a forecast about a brand’s citation share. Preserve that distinction when explaining the change internally: the immediate risk is interruption of the team’s research input, while any change in search exposure would require separate evidence.

UK search choice belongs in the planning watchlist

The UK CMA’s September 23 proposal would allow eligible AI assistants on Android and Chrome search-choice screens, introduce annual default-provider prompts, and require clear content attribution from participating services. Comments are due October 9, and a final decision is expected by year end. As checked on October 1, this remains a consultation. A SaaS firm serving the UK should preserve engine-specific acquisition baselines so it can observe a future distribution change, but should not reallocate an October budget as if new defaults or attribution rights were already in force.

Add SI terminology to research for federal buyers

The September 29 US executive order on Super Intelligence directs the executive branch to use that term and SI in specified non-statutory communications and documents, to the extent permitted by law. It does not require rewriting historical regulations or contracts. If federal agencies are a target market, add these terms to the team’s government-document searches and buyer-language review alongside existing AI terms. Test demand before retitling acquisition pages: the order changes official vocabulary, but supplies no evidence that private buyers changed their queries or that search engines changed rankings.

Put access and interpretation ahead of a larger GEO budget

The first October assignment should go to the owner of crawl access and important URLs. The second should go to the analyst who can keep ranking movement, visual inputs, bot attention, brand classification, and buyer actions legible. Those jobs protect both the existing search channel and the ability to judge a new one. They also create a clear stopping condition: if access is sound and the new measurement slices do not change a page or market decision, return analyst time to the buyer problems already visible in the pipeline.

A plugin or AI Mode monitoring experiment earns a place after that groundwork when a real customer task fits the surface. Give it a small scope and a decision date. The cost is engineering or research time that could have improved an existing landing page; the condition for continuing is evidence of useful discovery or product use. September expanded the places where a SaaS product can be found and the ways its presence can be observed. The growth decision still rests on which of those places brings a suitable buyer closer to a successful evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

When can we close the September spam-update annotation?

Close it when Google’s incident record reports completion. It still had no completion entry when checked October 1. Keep the original page and query comparison so a later review can distinguish movement during the rollout from changes made afterward.

Can we refuse AI training and keep search discovery?

The answer depends on the operator and the control. Apple documents that separation, and Cloudflare’s Disallow AI Training setting preserves search access for participating mixed-use crawlers. Audit the specific settings and remaining operator gaps before representing a site-wide policy as fully implemented.

Does multimodal reporting tell us which image earned a citation?

The new Google filter identifies searches begun with supported image inputs. The announcement does not identify a site’s individual image as the cause or prove a citation. Use it to choose landing pages for inspection, then test their usefulness for the buyer’s visible problem.

Should every SaaS vendor build a ChatGPT plugin now?

Start where a customer can complete a useful product task within ChatGPT and the team can support it. OpenAI’s improved discovery announcement creates an opportunity to test, without guaranteeing placement. A plugin that requires continuing engineering work needs activation and account-quality evidence to earn that investment.

How should we interpret a jump after editing Clarity Brand Terms?

Check how much of the movement comes from reclassification. The September change lets aliases and other forms count toward branded queries. Annotate edits and inspect underlying examples before calling the result an increase in awareness or AI recommendations.

Are the UK choice screens and Reddit RSS shutdown already effective?

They have different statuses. The CMA proposal is still in consultation, with a decision expected by year end. Reddit announced a November 13 RSS retirement. Keep UK distribution assumptions provisional and resolve dependent research feeds during October.
